Prambanan lights, and the epic begins.
As the spires floodlight against the night sky, dancers in gold tell the Ramayana the way Java has told it for centuries, out in the open beneath the temple that inspired it. In the wet season the stage moves indoors, but the story stays the same.
Down into the caves, out to the coast.
An hour south the land turns to limestone. Drop by rope into Jomblang’s sinkhole for the shaft of light the guides call heaven’s ray, tube the underground river through Pindul, then ride the timber gondola out to Timang’s fishing rock above the surf.
